Registration Summary

To summarize the registration process:

  1. Recognize the importance of building and protecting a strong identity.  Proper use of marks, federal registration, and astute marketing can be key.
  2. Make sure you have a mark that is distinctive and likely registerable.  Consultation with us and a registerability search can be a big help.
  3. Properly prepare and file a federal trademark application for your mark.  There are lots of potential pitfalls.  Seriously consider utilizing a professional.
  4. Recognize it will likely take 9 to 24 months to register your mark.   In the meanwhile, always use the mark correctly and prepare specimens of use that will be acceptable to the USPTO.  See our Guidelines for tips.
