What are the Costs of Seeking a Patent?

From the perspective of most individuals, patents are relatively expensive to obtain.

For example, by the time the United States Patent and Trademark Office (“USPTO”) actually issues a U.S. patent, a typical patent applicant will have spent a total of at least $12,000 (and possibly considerably more) on the costs of preparation, filing, and, although somewhat deferred, prosecuting the underlying U.S. non-provisional patent application.

The filing and prosecution costs in countries foreign to the U.S. can be less, but in several cases are greater.

Fortunately, most of the prosecution costs can be deferred until long after the patent application is prepared and filed.

We would be glad to discuss ways to manage these and all patent-related costs.
